First of all, I want to tell you that I do watch the news every day, and on more than one local channel. I do not hate the news, I just really dislike the way it is being delivered to me.
I am not picking on any particular person, station, channel, or network. It could be that your station has addressed many of these issues already, or never had to address them. If that is the case then more power to you, and I wish I lived in your market. But my experience tells me that many stations have a tendency to copy what other stations in their market, and in other markets, are doing with the news. So the bad habits have spread across the nation rather profusely. I am a concerned citizen whose daughter works for a television station as anchor/reporter. I am President of a technology company, but I think that the local news has become too high-tech and buzzy. There can be freshness in the news without the excessive graphics, banners, noises, and flashes. The best newscasts of all time were made that way by the PEOPLE, not the gadgetry. I do not think the news should be void of technology. Certainly the advancements in blue/green screen (chroma key), video tape, and satellite technology over the last 10 years alone have added significantly to the quality and entertainment value of our local newscasts. But we must stop short of overkill, so the local news does not become an animated cartoon show. I realize that the local news is now expected to be a profit generator for the station, and it's owner. Ratings & Market Share are now an integral part of the local news. One of the reasons this is true is because the local news has gradually expanded from about 2 hours per day to about 5 hours per day. Another reason is because so many local stations are owned by large corporations that are "bottom line" and "stock price" conscious, and could care less about quality. But, face it corporate America, the Local News will never be a profit producer...only a profit eater. Have fun with my site (some of it is funny), and be sure to send me some feedback (pro or con). So far about 95% of what you have said has been pro. I can't tell you my name, or where I live, because I really don't want any of you showing up on my doorstep with a microphone and video camera. Thank you very much! Anchor |
